Hemp seed is one of the few things in the cannabis space where the nutritional claims are largely accurate and the compositional data is uncontroversial. It is a well-characterised food, and it was a food long before it was a wellness product.

What Is in Hemp Seed
Protein. Hemp seed contains roughly 25–30% protein by weight, and it is a complete protein — containing all nine essential amino acids. The main storage proteins, edestin and albumin, are readily digestible. That combination is uncommon in plant sources and is the basis of most of hemp’s nutritional interest.
Fatty acids. Hemp seed is around 30% oil, and the fatty acid profile is the more distinctive part. The omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is roughly 3:1, close to what is generally regarded as favourable — most Western diets run far higher in omega-6. Hemp oil also contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which is present in few common foods.
Fibre. Whole hemp seeds contain useful quantities of both soluble and insoluble fibre. Hulled hemp hearts, which is what most people buy, contain considerably less because the fibre is largely in the hull.
Micronutrients. Vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, iron and zinc, in meaningful amounts.
The Forms It Comes In
Hemp hearts — hulled seeds. Soft, mildly nutty, eaten raw on food or blended. The most common retail form.
Whole seeds — with hull intact. Higher fibre, harder texture.
Hemp seed oil — cold-pressed. Best used unheated, as a finishing oil or in dressings, since the polyunsaturated fatty acids that make it nutritionally interesting are also what makes it unsuitable for high-heat cooking. It oxidises readily, so it should be kept cool and dark and used within a reasonable period.
Hemp protein powder — the meal left after oil extraction, milled. Lower protein concentration than isolated soy or whey powders, with fibre and micronutrients retained.
Hemp milk — blended seed and water.
An Important Distinction
Hemp seed oil and CBD oil are different products, and the conflation is widespread enough to be a real consumer problem.
Hemp seed oil is pressed from seeds. It contains essentially no cannabinoids, because cannabinoids are produced in the trichomes on flowers and leaves, not in seeds. It is a food oil.
CBD oil is extracted from flower and leaf material and is a cannabinoid product.
Products are sometimes marketed in ways that blur this — “hemp oil” on a label can mean either, and some products priced as CBD contain only seed oil. Checking the certificate of analysis resolves it in seconds: seed oil shows no meaningful cannabinoid content.
What the Nutritional Evidence Supports
Hemp seed’s composition is well documented. What that composition does clinically is a narrower claim.
The reasonable statements are compositional: hemp seed is a complete plant protein, it has a favourable omega-6 to omega-3 ratio relative to typical Western intake, and it contains GLA, which few foods do.
Claims that hemp seed treats or prevents specific conditions go beyond what has been demonstrated. Most human research on hemp seed is limited, and the general benefits attributed to it are usually extrapolated from what is known about the individual nutrients rather than from trials of hemp seed itself.
It is a nutritious food. That is a sufficient claim, and it is defensible.
Practical Notes
Hemp seed is high in fat and therefore calorie-dense — a useful thing to know when adding it to a diet rather than substituting it in.
Fibre content differs sharply between whole seeds and hulled hearts, so introducing whole seeds abruptly can cause digestive discomfort.
Both seed and oil oxidise. Refrigeration after opening extends usable life considerably, and rancid hemp oil is unpleasant enough to be obvious.
Trace THC is present in some hemp seed products through contact between seeds and plant material during harvest. Levels are very low and well below what would cause effects, though people subject to drug testing occasionally raise it as a concern. Well-processed products minimise it.
Testing Food-Grade Hemp
This is the part that gets skipped, and it matters more for hemp than for most foods.
Heavy metals. Hemp is an efficient bioaccumulator — it draws elements out of soil and water and concentrates them in tissue, which is why it is used deliberately for soil remediation. Food-grade hemp needs heavy metal screening, particularly where the growing site has any industrial or intensive agricultural history.
Pesticides. Hemp entering the food chain faces food-safety residue limits, and the approved product list for hemp is narrow.
Microbials and mycotoxins. Standard food-safety requirements. Seed stored at inadequate moisture levels can develop mould, and mycotoxins persist after the mould is gone.
THC compliance. Confirming the material derives from compliant hemp.
The gap here is regulatory rather than technical. Hemp food products sit outside the mandatory batch-testing regime that governs dispensary cannabis, which means testing depends on the manufacturer choosing to do it. Reputable producers publish full panels. Others publish nothing, and the packaging looks identical.
