The pet CBD market expanded rapidly, and the marketing around it moved considerably faster than the research. Meanwhile veterinary emergency admissions for cannabis toxicity have risen sharply in legal markets — mostly involving edibles left within reach.
Both halves of that belong in any honest discussion of cannabis and pets.

THC Is Genuinely Dangerous for Dogs
This needs stating before anything else, because it is the part with immediate consequences.
Dogs have a considerably higher density of CB1 receptors in the brain than humans, particularly in the cerebellum and brainstem. That physiological difference means THC affects them more severely and at lower doses relative to body weight.
Signs of cannabis toxicity in dogs include loss of coordination, disorientation, dilated pupils, excessive drooling, vomiting, urinary incontinence, tremors, unusual sensitivity to sound and touch, and in severe cases, low heart rate, low body temperature, seizures and coma.
Cannabis toxicity in dogs is very rarely fatal on its own, but severe cases require veterinary intervention, and edibles carry compounding risks — chocolate is separately toxic to dogs, xylitol far more so, and a chocolate edible presents all three hazards simultaneously.
If a dog has ingested cannabis, contact a vet. Bring the packaging if you have it. Be straightforward about what and how much — veterinary staff need the information to treat, not to judge, and withholding it delays care.
The same applies to cats, though ingestion is less common.
Storage is the whole prevention story: sealed, secured, out of reach. The general storage guidance in how to store cannabis properly applies, with the addition that “out of reach” means genuinely out of reach of an animal that can jump onto a worktop.
What CBD Research in Animals Actually Shows
CBD is not intoxicating and has a different profile. The veterinary evidence base is small but no longer non-existent.
Osteoarthritis in dogs is the most studied application. Several controlled studies have reported improvements in comfort and activity in dogs with osteoarthritis receiving CBD. These are small studies, and the results are consistent enough to be of genuine interest. This is the strongest evidence in the field.
Seizures in dogs. A small controlled study reported a reduction in seizure frequency in dogs with idiopathic epilepsy receiving CBD alongside conventional medication, though the proportion of dogs classified as responders was not markedly different from control. Promising, not established.
Anxiety. Widely marketed and thinly evidenced. Studies in dogs have produced mixed results, with several finding no significant effect on situational anxiety measures. This is the largest gap between marketing and evidence in the category.
Pharmacokinetics. Reasonably characterised in dogs — how CBD is absorbed, metabolised and eliminated is better understood than what it does.
Research in cats is considerably thinner, and cats appear to metabolise cannabinoids differently from dogs. Extrapolating dog findings to cats is not sound.
What Is Known About Safety
Studies in dogs have generally found CBD reasonably tolerated at the doses studied, with the most consistent finding being elevated liver enzymes — alkaline phosphatase in particular.
Whether that indicates clinically meaningful liver stress over long-term use is not established, and it is the main reason veterinary monitoring matters for any animal on CBD for an extended period. Blood work before starting and periodically afterwards is a reasonable precaution.
Drug interactions are a real consideration. Cannabinoids affect the same metabolic enzymes that process many veterinary medications, which can alter their levels. The mechanism is the same one described in cannabis and drug interactions.
The Product Quality Problem
This is where testing becomes central, and where the pet market is worse than the human one.
Analyses of retail pet CBD products have repeatedly found CBD content that does not match the label — sometimes far below, sometimes above, sometimes absent entirely. Some products have been found to contain THC in a category where THC is specifically the compound to avoid.
Pet products sit outside the mandatory batch-testing regime that governs dispensary cannabis. Testing is voluntary, and nothing on the packaging distinguishes a manufacturer that tests thoroughly from one that does not.
For an animal that cannot report how it feels and weighs a fraction of an adult human, an inaccurate dose matters more, not less.
What to check
- A current certificate of analysis, with a batch number matching the product.
- CBD content verified against the label claim.
- THC content, which for a pet product should be as close to zero as the analysis can establish.
- Contaminant panels — pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents, microbials. Hemp is an efficient bioaccumulator, which makes heavy metal screening particularly relevant.
- An accredited third-party laboratory, named on the report.

A Reasonable Position
CBD for osteoarthritis in dogs has the beginnings of a real evidence base and is worth discussing with a veterinarian. Most other applications are marketed well ahead of what has been demonstrated.
THC is not appropriate for animals and is a veterinary emergency in meaningful quantities.
And whatever the application, the product needs to be verified — because in a market with no mandatory testing, the label is a claim rather than information.
